Information on Linux
Here is where you will find information about Linux that I have
gleaned, figured out, etc. When I fool around with my system,
here is probably where you will find a lot of things.
Good Books on Linux
- Ball, Bill, et al. Using Linux. Indianapolis: Que, 1998
A good clean beginners book. Touches on a little bit of everything, just
enough to get started.
- Pitts, David, et al. Red Hat Linux Unleashed. 2nd Ed.
Indianapolis: Sams, 1998
Covers Red Hat Linux 4.2. CD-ROM included. Big thick book. Haven't ploughed
through it yet.

Got DOSEMU to work. Quite simple actually, just follow the instructions.
Now I just have to see if I can get the CDROM working. Back to the
instructions.
I ran the DRDOS hdimage that Caldera Thin Clients is giving out for
evaluation. Pick it up at Caldera
Thin Clients.
Helpful hint: Program doesn't work out of the box with RPMs? Try
getting the source RPMs and recompiling. The source RPMs should move all
the stuff into /usr/src/redhat. Just go into /usr/src/redhat/SPECS and type
rpm -ba .spec where is, well..,
the name of the program. Unless someone was really stupid and named the
specfile something crazy... Anyways, this will configure and compile a new
RPM which will by in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS that might work because it has
all the configuration options set for your computer.
Install-sendmail
Looking for a way to configure your personal Linux system so that you can
get your POP mail without using Netscape? Want to setup Sendmail to
automatically send your mail when you log on? Don't want to learn
everything about Sendmail to do it? Try install-sendmail by Donncha O
Caoimh. You can get it at
his homepage.
You'll need sendmail-8.9.2 to use it. For RedHat 5.2 users, you
can get it at contrib.redhat.com.
You'll need the sendmail and sendmail-cf RPMs under the architecture of
your choice. (I've only checked the i386.)
If you can't get in at
contrib.redhat.com, check the
RPM repository on rpmfind.net.
It'll have just about everything. Or if you want to compile it yourself,
try the Sendmail homepage.
You'll also need fetchmail, and procmail installed.
A few notes:
- If you are using the install-sendmail 2.1 from
Freshmeat check your sendmail.cf file
after it's created. Make sure that the references to procmail are correct.
I spend a whole night wondering where my mail was going, only to find out that
sendmail was calling /usr/local/bin/procmail, as opposed to /usr/bin/procmail.
- Change the file permissions of sendmail.cf and sendmail.cw to 644,
otherwise sendmail barfs. Type chmod 644 sendmail.cf.
- Make sure that the loopback device in started at boot time. This means
to make sure that the right 'network' initscript is in the rc.* directory.
Use ntsysv or tksysv on RedHat and making sure that
'network' is started on your run-level. To check whether your loopback
device is working, type ifconfig, or ping 127.0.0.1.
Things should show up.
Current Problem/Project: Compiling GIMP with all it's plugins.
Created by GNU/Emacs. Should find/make a button.
